Best Discs for Hot Weather Disc Golf
Share
Playing disc golf in Laredo in the summer is its own experience. By 9am it's already 90 degrees and humid. By noon you're done. The heat affects everything — your grip, your energy, even how your discs fly.
Here's what I've learned about playing and choosing discs in extreme heat.
How Heat Affects Plastic
Disc golf plastic gets softer in high heat. Baseline plastics like DX, D-Line, and Prime are the most affected — leave them in a hot car and they can warp permanently. Premium plastics like Champion, Star, Z, Lucid, and Opto hold up much better. If you're playing in Laredo summers, premium plastic is worth the extra cost just from a durability standpoint.
Softer plastic also changes how a disc flies. A disc that's slightly overstable in cool conditions can fly more neutrally when it's warm and soft. It's a small effect but worth knowing — especially on putters where you're looking for precision.
Grip Is the Real Challenge
Sweaty hands are the biggest practical problem in hot weather disc golf. Your grip weakens when your hands are wet, discs slip at release, and your throws get inconsistent.
The fix is simple. Keep a towel on your bag and dry your hand and the disc before every throw. This is standard practice for serious players in any climate but it's non-negotiable in Laredo heat. A chalk bag or Whale Sacs are another option — they absorb moisture and give your hand extra grip. We carry both at the store.
Best Discs for Hot Conditions
For putters, stick with heavier weights in premium plastic. A 174-175g Judge or Hope in Lucid or Royal Grand won't warp and won't get affected by heat the way a baseline putter will.
For midranges, the Buzzz in Z plastic and the Discmania MD3 in C-Line are both durable and hold their flight characteristics well in heat. Avoid leaving any midrange in a hot car — even premium plastic can warp if it gets hot enough.
For drivers, Champion and Star plastic from Innova hold up best. Z and ESP from Discraft and Lucid from Dynamic Discs are also solid. The main thing to avoid is leaving drivers stacked on each other in a hot bag in direct sun — they can warp and affect each other's flight plates.
When to Play
Honestly — early morning or after sunset. El Chainazo runs at night for a reason. The glow discs aren't just a gimmick — they're a practical solution to Laredo summers. An Eclipse disc in the dark at 8pm is genuinely more comfortable than playing at 2pm in July. If you haven't tried a night round yet, you're missing out on some of the best disc golf Laredo has to offer.
